Winter Beach

Shall we go to the edge of the land?
Have the wind slap at us,
the spray salt our faces,
and the sea freeze our feet?

We’ll get wet rumps
from perching on damp rocks
while we peer in pools
and watch shelled creatures
who dwell there in their silence.

We can shout and scream
And no one will hear us
above the sound
of the angry surf.

We can run on the sand
with the freedom of bare soles
then drink lukewarm tea
from a flask
as we watch the sea
eat the sun.

On the Quay at Fishguard

DSC_0880

We sat and stared at the sea
its distant calm expanse
as blue as the sky.
Closer, the kaleidoscope of grey patterns
hid its secret creatures,
as the seaweed danced
to natures rhythm.

Boats slid across the surface,
or, captured by a buoy,
swayed sadly in the wake.
Gulls gossiped and watched
as the crab man came
and unloaded his catch,
startled red within their cages.

Then the ferry loomed,
its bulk altering perspectives
as it steered imperiously to port.

Dried Up

My sea of words
ebbs and flows.
Today my tide is out
the grey sand is dry,
and though ideas float on
the offshore breeze
they fade into dust
before they land.

Perhaps tomorrow
gentle waves
will send them home
to this blank white beach.

(yep, tip of the day… if you’re stuck about what to write, write about being stuck about what to write 🙂 )

On a pebble beach…

DSC_0449These photographs were taken on Holy Island, Northumberland, where one of the pebbly beaches behind the castle is covered in these piles of stones which have been built by visitors over many years. The one below caught my eye and inspired me to write the little verses underneath.

Man of Stone

I stand amongst these shining rocks
and observe the swelling sea, where,
in that swaying garden,
my lover drifts alone
while coloured fish play
in her flexuous hair
and fallen stars gather
to weep their salty tears

No forces will deter me nor erode my will
I’ll stand here watching, waiting,
until, until…

Until the earth is sodden and
waves consume my soul,
and tumbling I join her
in the grave grey depths below
where together we’ll blend
into that stony bed
and our blissful cries will echo
forever
